THE FAMILY OF
ASAEL BENTLEY, SON OF DAVID

Asael Bentley, son of David and Ann (Baldwin) Bentley, was born Mar 8, 1755 in Norwich, CT, and came to Cornwallis with his parents in 1761. Asael married in Cornwallis May 26, 1778, to Lucy Clark, daughter of Asa and Sarah (Hopson) Clark. Lucy was born Mar 15, 1760.

Asael was a farmer and was given a share of his father's land before his father's death.

Their children were:
(01) Alice born Apr 8, 1779
(02) Anne " May 2, 1782
(03) Charlotte " April 1786
(04) Caleb George " June 29, 1788
(05) William " July 4, 1791
(06) Sarah " Dec 19, 1796 or 1798

Asael died Nov 22, 1825 but the date of Lucy's death is not recorded.

Their has been a reference to an Ashael Jr but this is suspected to be Ashael the son of George Caleb Bentley because George died soon after his children were born and the children were probably brought up in the grandfather's home, which may give reason to call him "Junior".

(01) Alice (or Allis or Ellis) Bentley, daughter of Asael and Lucy (Clark) Bentley was born April 3, 1779 in Cornwallis, and married as his second wife, Sept 7, 1819, Oliver Woodworth, son of Thomas and Zerviah (Fox) Woodworth. Oliver who was born Jan 19, 1756, first marriage in April 25, 1782 to Ruby Pineo, who was born Sept 17,1765 and was the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Sampson) Pineo. Alice and Oliver had no known children.

(02) Anne Bentley, daughter of Asael and Lucy (Clark) Bentley, was born May 2, 1782 in Cornwallis and married in Nov 28, 1804, in the Baptist Church by Rev Edward Manning, John Kinsman Wheaton, son of George (born Feb 6, 1748-9) and Susannah (born Jun 17, 1753) (Kinsman) Wheaton.

Their children (surnamed Wheaton) were:

(07) William Henry, Born Dec 10, 1805

John married second in Oct 27, 1813 to Elizabeth Bentley, her 1st cousin and daughter of John and Miriam (Gillet) Bentley (see #14 - Family of David Bentley - Cornwallis Grantee). Elizabeth was born Oct 3, 1789 in Cornwallis.

(04) Caleb George Bentley, daughter of Asael and Lucy (Clark) Bentley was born June 28, 1788 in Cornwallis and married to Jane Robertson whose parentage is unknown. Jane is believed to have come from Scotland and she spoke Gaelic.

Their children were:
(12) Andrew George born May 18, 1812
(13) Asahel " Nov 10, 1813

George died while driving cattle on the way to Halifax on April 14, 1816. A notice in the Halifax paper of April 20, 1816 states:

"In this town, Mr. George Bentley, of Cornwallis--he left a wife and three children".

We are now left with a problem of who was the 3rd child. The Cornwallis Township Book only lists the children noted above. A daughter name Alice has been suggested bt there has been no other reference to her. It may be possible that Andrew and George were twins but there is nothing to confirm this. Whoever the third child was he/she must have died young as there is no other record of another child.

The following notice appeared in the paper:

"NOTICE. All persons having any demands against the estate of the late George Bentley, of Cornwallis, deceased, are requested to send in their accounts duty attested, within eighteen calendar months from the date hereof, and all persons indebted to said estate are requested to make immidate payment to

Jane Bentley, adm'r
Ashel Bentley, adm'r"

Cornwallis, April 14, 1816

Jane (Robertson) Bentley married in Jan 3, 1828 to John Mayhew Bill, as his second wife. John was born July 9, 1791 and had married to first wife Sarah DeWolf, who was born in 1784 and died in Jan 14, 1822. John Bill died Aug 3, 1868 and was buried at Billtown. It was not known when Jane died but it is presumed that she was buried with her second husband in Billtown Cemetary.

(05) William Bentley, son of Asael and Lucy (Clark) Bentley, was born July 4, 1791 in Corwnwallis and married Feb 6, 1814 in the Baptist Church in Cornwallis by Rev. Edward Manning, Ruth Eaton, daughter of James (Aug 14, 1767 - May 1813) and Nancy (died prob. 1798) (Manning) Eaton. Ruth was born April 14, 1794.

Their children were:
(14) Nancy born Dec 20, 1815

(06) Sarah Bentley, daughter of Aseal and Lucy (Clark) Bentley was born Dec 19, 1796 in Cornwallis.

(12) Andrew George Bentley, son of Caleb George and Jane (Robertson) Bentley, was born May 18, 1812 and married Nov 7, 1838 to Ruth Ells, daughter of (as this Bentley family believes) Lemuel (June 9, 1773- June 6, 1813 and Susanna (1781-Feb 27, 1846) (Cogswell) Ells and not daughter of Joshua and Mehitable (Rand) Ells as " The History of King's County" states. Lemuel Ells was the son of Joshua "JR" Ells. Ruth was born April 12, 1806.

This Family is continued in the chapter on "The Family of Andrew Bentley" (email brenan@mts.net )

(13) Asahel Bentley, son of Caleb George and Jane (Robertson) Bentley, was born Nov 10, 1813 in Cornwallis according to the family chart of 1896, but according to The Cornwallis Township Book he was born in 1814. As his father died when he was very young he was probably brought up with his grandfather and so sometimes appears as "Jr".

Asahel married in March 14, 1838 to Elizabeth Caroline Gesner, daughter of John Henry and Mary Lydia (Chase) Gesner. Elizabeth was born Sept 9, 1817 as per the family chart of 1896 and was 53 at the time of her death in 1871. The Cornwallis Township Book says she was born in 1819.

This Family is continued in the chapter on "The Family of Asahel Bentley". "Jr"
